Please help...I want to talk about adding an adverbial clause after the reporting clause when writing dialogue. I want to construct the sentence thus: "Have a ship's biscuit," said Christopher Columbus, offering the tin. What word class is 'offering'? I know it's a verb, but what is it called with an ...ing on the end? My friend said gerund but I don't agree. Or should I? Thank you

No, it's not a gerund, which is an -ing verb acting as a noun. A gerund is:
Dancing has always been a great pleasure of his. I hope you don't mind my opening the window. She hated his reading her diary.
In: "Christopher Columbus, offering the tin" offering is being used as a verb and so is just a present participle.
