Anyone have an idea why half a circle is a semicircle, but half a sphere is a hemisphere?
(I know, not really expecting logic.)

Ooh, now I mentioned semiquavers and demisemiquavers when discussing this with my wife yesterday. I'd forgotten the next division was hemidemisemi, and had never come across the magnificent semihemidemisemi before.

Your reference gives semi as Latin, hemi as Greek, and demi as Old French.
