He probably makes candlesticks as a side-line.

Aptronym? Is that your own invention?

Aptronym? Is that your own invention? No, Bertie. It's an existing word; been around since the 1920s. Here's a Wikipedia article on it. An entry can be found for it in The Macquarie Dictionary (Oz) and the Oxford online, but not in the OED 2nd edn.

Nor in my 3rd edition OED (shorter).

Nasty but apt(ronym)In Oz, carno was slang for "carnal knowledge", the name of the charge for having sex with a minor in the 1960s.

I've been dissed!
Yesterday I made a submission to a government department.
Today I received the standard dismissive and disrespectful form-letter reply signed, appropriately, by a Craig Diss.

And then there's that New Yorker, Anthony Weiner, who flashed his weiner on the interweb. Tch tch! Perhaps a name change would be wise for that fellow.

I was reading about the 1944 Fauld Explosion when I came across this double aptronym: The artist David Bomberg was briefly employed as a war artist by the (British) War Ministry in 1943. He created a series of paintings under the collective title The bomb store. Not only the happy coincidence of bomb, but also the berg is relevant: in the explosion, the entire hill ( berg = mountain), under which lay the munitions store, was blown sky high.

I must be going dotty(er?)! I was sure I'd posted this earlier today, but it wasn't here when I checked just now. Early-onset dementia?
The Queensland (AU) state government has amended the age of consent so that all consensual sexual acts are now permissible at age 16 (previously one act was proscribed until participants were age 18).
The politician responsible? Health Minister Dick. Of course.
