Hello All,
I thought I would have a quick look at the Forum for the first time after something like two years.
The first thing I noticed was the currency of my post of 2010 regarding the spelling of mandarin/mandarine. I really couldn't get over the fact it was still of interest.
Why the long absence? Well, I spent the best part of last year in hospital and rehab. I entered hospital with acquired haemophilia, a blood disorder where one of the blood's clotting agents goes missing. Shortly after admission a scan revealed a large bruise in my upper left leg which rendered the leg useless. The bruise was impinging on the nerves which operate the leg. I became totally dependent on the nurses, slings and lifting machines to move about. The doctors could not tell me if my leg would recover and when I started rehab I was in an electric wheelchair. I learned that my rehab was for wheelchair training and, as I was still unable to use my leg, I realised that my future was life in a wheelchair. MY family started looking for a home to look after me.
Out of the blue one day, I asked my physiotherapist if she could test if my leg was at all able to let me stand on it. She had me in a walking frame and, with tears (yes, I cried) of joy, I discovered was able to walk. My case manager immediately told my family to stop looking for a home and arranged for me to be transferred to another rehab centre more suitable to my new-found needs. A month or so later I was back home getting about on a four-wheel walker.
Part of the hospital treatment for the haemophilia was a very large dose of prednisolone (steroids). This, amongst other things, affected my vision. I was due to have cataract eye operations at the same time as I went into hospital. Obviously these were delayed and I have just completed their treatment. Unfortunately, I still have a vision problem which is under investigation. This problem makes it difficult to read and use the computer. So, where once I was an active participant on the Forum, I will not be so now.
Hoppefully the bad stuff is behind me. It's good to be back, even though it might be part time.
