Thanks, Trevor. I did actually think of that just as I hit Send on my post.

I think we have a “diminution” of ntaps-forum-contributors.
I am always conflicted, if that is the word I want, regarding collective nouns. I think most of them have never been used except in lists of collective nouns. We really need someone to do a rigorous search to discover when if ever some words were in normal use, even by specialist sectors of the community. I have grave doubts about whether there was ever usage of the term leap/lepe of leopards. Leopards are by nature solitary animals and to see anything more than a mother, a couple of cubs and an attacking male together would be unusual. I do not believe that a 15th century monk is likely to have encountered it, let alone have found a use for it. Has anybody ever seen a sufficiently large group of larks to justify the unlikely term “exaltation”? From time to time newspapers and others amuse themselves and their readers by inviting suggestions for new terms and people respond inventively. I have just invented “diminution” for ntaps-forum-contributors but I don’t envisage its being cited in any dictionary in the near future. Of course, a word is a word whether it is in use or merely a joke but it will be good to distinguish them.

It's already 12.38 hrs, 01.01.23 AEST, in eastern AU and the new year dawned clear and bright, followed by a light shower and a magnificent double rainbow *. The temperature is predicted to peak at about 30°C – more bearable than Xmas Day, which delivered us 37°C. How I thank the gods for air-conditioning! A happy and healthy 2023 to all! * Given my experience of and lifelong familiarity with flooding, I'm somewhat sceptical of the biblical fable about the meaning of the ’bow: God's promise to Noah that there'd never be another such inundation. PS: Even hot days such as Xmas are far more comfortable because the humidity here at my new location peaks at about 55%; my native, northern climate never delivered less than 70% – and that was when it wasn't raining. And unlike the north, moulds aren't a thing here, so my books and armpits are safe. PPS: I'd intended this post for a new thread, then plumb forgot to make such thread. Never mind: Trevor has begun the January thread. Hey ho!
