If I notice that I have been smited, my reaction is to regret that something I have written, has caused someone to be annoyed. In these cases I hope that it is because I have phrased something badly, or too abrupty (as it is not my intention to provoke negative reactions). I hope that this makes me consider what I have written more carefully next time, before posting it (obviously not successfully, as I see that my karma has decreased recently! Apologies to whoever I annoyed.)
I have never (yet!) smited anyone, though I have occasionally exalted someone (different someones). It's quite nice to be able to do that. Paul - is it a choice of having both exalt and smite, or neither?

I suspect that very high or low karmas are largely the work of one person; maybe the same person. I have never smited anyone. Karma is supposed to be vaguely amusing; if I feel it is being abused as a form of bullying, I shall turn it off. To be fair, I haven't noticed goofy complaining, which probably means that he is a better sport than I am!

Each member can exalt (or smite) only once per hour, so a rapid increase or decrease in karma is unlikely to be the work of a single member. I suspect that Pete's publicly declared decision to exalt Goofy led to some tongue-in-cheek smiting by several others.

On the current theme, I am always very interested in goofy's views, because they are often different from (or 'to' or 'than' - cross-threading a bit ) those of the rest of you/us. My criticisms would be that they are almost always from the same source and that he often puts out bald facts without taking the time to explain the point he is making in sufficient detail, until he is challenged. I guess this is because I assume you guys know some of the history of the usage dispute already. Bad habit of mine.
