>That leaves a huge area in between, and in there we have things like PVC.
Perhaps the answer is to say that if it's being used as an acronym, then it's an acronym.<
Is "SOS" then an acronym? (Remembering that the words "save our soles" (joke, there) were constructed later to fit that which started as a simple and clear doth-dash code for "help"!
(For that matter, what is "Mayday" when similarly used?)
But my point remains that "PVC" is a short name (or even just a name) for the stuff. (As, thus, is uPVC.)

I think that's where we got to. I was happy with abbreviation. For the record, I don't like "short name", which someone suggested. It's too much like Tim for Timothy or Chris instead of Christopher!

It seems to come down to personal preference. To my mind, PVC is an initialism (or, if you like, a pseudo-initialism).

It's too much like Tim for Timothy or Chris instead of Christopher! ... or Pete Although in my case Pete isn't short for anything. It is my sole legal forename.

That's interesting. Or odd! Or neither? Kinda feels normal to me! I changed it by statutory declaration many years ago.
