Hi
If someone is snowed in, is their journey to work 'affected' or 'effected' by the snow.
Thanks Ben

My journey to work is affected, because the snow has had an effect on my ability to get to work. If I had a contingency plan to get to work in bad weather, I might effect that plan if there has been heavy snow.
And if I am too precious about grammar, etc. I might be said to be affected, due to my affectation. ;D
Is that at all helpful?

The way I understand it is that to affect (verb)something is to have an effect (noun)on it, whereas to effect (verb)something is to bring it into being or cause it to happen.

...And now both words have already stopped meaning anything as I've looked at them too many times.

Ben, if your journey to work was effected by snow, it would mean you got to work by means of the snow.

Gee, I thought both affect and effect had been replaced by impact.
Ben, ignore my cynicism. It's good to know someone out there still wants to use affect and effect. I think the previous posters have answered your question.

Paul, on reflection, should this thread be moved to the QLQ sub-board? It's was a language question with some useful 'reference material' in the responses (especially alexknibb's, which explained why I write what I write, although I couldn't have explained it myself).
