How do you spell DIETICIAN / DIETITIAN? I ask out of curiosity because I saw a rather large signboard outside a practitioner's place of business and thought the sign was wrong. My dictionary tells me that the sign was correct and my spelling is an alternative.

I would spell it with a C, but I have seen the other spelling.

I work with them and they insist it's with a T. All our reports have to be the T version.

Anybody know an electritian or an optitian? ;D
My (1989) Webster's has dietitian flagged as an Americanism; also listed as: [now rare] dietician.

Interesting. I would have said DIETICIAN, but the Macquarie Dictionary, the previous couple of posts, and the signboard I saw, all suggest that I'm wrong. Sorry, Alan, perhaps you and I need to revise.
In the light of many similar words (technician, mortician, musician and etc.) DIETITIAN does look odd.

SOED says:
dietitian noun. Also -ician. M19. [ORIGIN from diet noun¹ + -itian irreg. form of -ician.] A person who is skilled in or practises dietetics.
And has no separate entry for "dietician"!
It surprised me, also.

Since starting this thread I've come across a few -ician words (just now, clinician) and they all seem to refer to a person. Can anyone think of other -itian words that might show up some pattern, or is DIETITIAN the odd one out?
There are many -ition words in which the suffix has the same sound, and the ones that come quickly to mind are all 'things', such as repetition, position, addition, petition, etc., an observation that probably has nothing at all to do with DIETICIAN / DIETITION.

I'd spell it 'dietician', because: it would be the odd one out it looks right to me the computer accepts it with a 'c' but not with a 't'!
I think it's simply a case of there being two acceptable spellings and it comes down to personal preference - or corporate house style as in Dr Mildr's case!
