I think that geographic plateaux have to be raised, but graphical plateaux have only to be level ...

Paul: I thought that you favored treating imported words, once adopted, as English regarding pluralization; in fairness, both plateaus and plateaux are given as the plural by Webster. And by the way, this forum's Spell Check didn't like plateaux.

And by the way, this forum's Spell Check didn't like plateaux. Dave, interesting point. I would definitely favour plateaus but several fancy cakes would be gateaux. This is, of course, direct from the school of instinctive English, so I have no idea why I am being inconsistent on this.

Dave, I was doing it because this is the sort of place where I can! You're quite right -- I would normally write plateaus (not that I often need to).

Interesting headline on BBC News site: "US child obesity 'hits plateau' ". So now a plateau is a target, perhaps? I would have used "reaches plateau", or even recast to give the flavour of a fall in the rate of increase.

I did quite a lot of fell-walking in my youth. Coming to, or "hitting", a plateau was very welcome as a break from slogging up a steep mountain-side.
