Older person here...in Victoria, Australia, back when I was a kid, everyone said mandarine, and spelled it that way. I'm not sure when this changed, but it did. Ditto from an older person in New South Wales, AU. I noticed the change in spelling and pronunciation perhaps in the late ’80s.

It has just now occurred to me that a parallel exists between mandarin(e) and nectarin(e).
While mandarin(e) has lost its e (and its ’een), nectarine retains its e – and is reportedly (OED) pronounced as either ~een or ~әn (the latter my pronunciation).
