“But then another storm came in - and another, and another. I kept tuning in for the local TV weather forecast presented by a man called, I kid you not, Dallas Raines. There wasn't a hint of gloom about his own sunny outlook and bright shiny smile but his map told a very different tale. Downtown Los Angeles saw more rain in January and February than during the whole of last year.” www.bbc.co.uk/news/stories-47750935

In this month's newsletter from a car club I'm informed that a membership application was declined – by club secretary/registrar Corrie De Klijn. Too good to be true? Almost – but I know the woman and she does pronounce her surname decline. (I'd perhaps have used denied rather than declined – but that's how the newsletter reported it.)
De Klijn sounds like a Pythonesque bank-loans manager character.

Perhaps the applicant was a fifth-columnist secretly working for Extinction Rebellion?

Just as a matter of pure nosiness, why might a membership application to a car club be declined? Perhaps the applicant was a fifth-columnist secretly working for Extinction Rebellion? He was allegedly guilty of misbehaviour in a previous club (using a club-plated – i.e. historic – vehicle when he oughtn't have). For vehicles more than 30 years old one can get "club plates" for $50/year (about 1/20 of full road licensing), but one must (a) maintain a truthful logbook, and (b) not use the club-plated vehicle for purposes outside certain defined limits. Being caught doing so effectively means driving without registration and insurance, worth a total of $1,800 in fines – plus a black mark for the offender's car club. He was rightfully de Klijned membership.

Not (yet) aptronymic, but when I found this fellow's odd name in the news (ABC) I looked him up on his school website – and it would seem he does exist. Kyden Power-O'Toole
Kyden Power-O'Toole
Kyden Power-O'TooleOne assumes his mother was a Power and his father an O'Toole, but what a combination. I wonder if his mates give him a hard time about the name, and if he'll take on a trade such as builder.

Australia's current Employment minister is Michaelia Cash. No doubt she's not as short of her surname as many unemployed people.

Dr Marissa Parrott PhD, biologist, Melbourne University, Wildlife Conservation and Science, Zoos Victoria. I wonder: does she teach parrot fashion? Perhaps she's a strange bird.
