Barry: Ah, yes - The Swimming Pool Library was good reading (long time ago). Don't recall having read any other books of his, so must check them out. Thanks.

Vv, >go for a long drive in the bush!<You mean that you will drive in something other than a Benz? Try Pratchett, but do start with the first ("The Colour of Magic"). (Or risk jumping ahead to "The Last Continent" for geographical recognition.) Tone

Vv, >go for a long drive in the bush!<You mean that you will drive in something other than a Benz? You mean you aren't aware of the M-B G-Wagen (pronounced gay warghen !) 4WD series? (The G stands for Gelandewagen - "going on the land car".) But no, can't afford one of those (they start at above $AU100k!). I bush-bash in a couple of my regular 30- to 40-year-old sedans - the models that used to win many of the trans-Africa rallies. Righto - off to my local library first, then to the bookshops if I must. (I try to avoid buying "passing-interest" books these days as I have nowhere left to store them once used.)

If you're after something a bit different, but very readable, try Mary Gentle. I first read Golden Witchbreed and eventually worked my way through everything she has published.

You mean you aren't aware of the M-B G-Wagen [...] 4WD series?<Well, that one well fell flat, dinnit! Although I wouldn't put it past you to deliberately avoid it. "Bush" = alternative make of automobile! (Joke) Tone

In order after Swimming Pool Library:
The Folding Star (my least favourite; it was a bit of a second-class re-run of SPL, imho)
The Spell (brilliant; new direction, and very claustrophobic)
The Line of Beauty (excellent. I can't add anything to its Booker plaudits!)

Just stumbled across the following in the news: Classification Board spokeswoman Clare Bowdler.
The (Australian) Classification Board is an independent statutory body which makes classification decisions about films, computer games, and publications. It is, effectively, the censorship body.

Walter Wall - carpet fitter. DavidNW: Good to see you're joining in on the fun! Some / many of the threads on this board wander far and wide in the pursuit and sharing of knowledge as well as just having a linguistic hoot.

I recall having once posted this to the APS forum, but I'll repeat it for any who missed it. The name has - one hopes - no relationship to the man's primary occupation (plumber and gasfitter): Merv Wanker. He must have a mighty thick skin to have stuck with it for nigh on 60 years. And yes, he's real, a northern NSW (Oz) local.
