Oooh! Can we go Masonic? Pretty please. I've never wanted to be one, but all the grade/level titles sound so grand.

The next major thing to happen is that the board will go ad-free on May 1st. I'm not sure yet if that will be permanent: more on that in a day or two. Will this require us to click on sponsored links in order to avoid paying money? We do this on another forum - it's quite painless really, one just has to remember to do it now and again

Will this require us to click on sponsored links in order to avoid paying money? No, there will be no adverts and no sponsored links.

I've yet to see an ad or sponsored link on this board: Firefox's Adblock Plus and Safari + Pith Helmet take care of that! I really wasn't aware there were ads here. As for the member rankings: I find this all a tad irrelevant, and don't care what I'm called (okay, okay - but within very wide parameters ). On my Benz forums (er - I'll have to log on and look them up) I'm "Distinguished" (the second-from-bottom grade - I've only recently signed up); "Vintage" (like good wine or cheese, perhaps - oh, I get it - old cars!); "Classic" ... . Makes no difference to who I am or how I present myself; they are only labels, and to those I'm pretty much immune, having worn them all my life variously with shame, pride, and indifference. I take no notice of others' rankings, so I suspect that ranking is merely part of the forums' template structure, and ought not to be taken seriously.

I've yet to see an ad or sponsored link on this board: Firefox's Adblock Plus and Safari + Pith Helmet take care of that! Some people have a moral problem with adblockers, Vv. The argument is that as the ads fund the site you should take all or nothing. If you don't like the ads, don't read the site. Extremists say "that's the deal -- it's like stealing a magazine because you think it's too expensive". I don't take that extreme view (indeed, I use Adblock on the Bravenet site -- but only on that site, and only because the ads are SO intrusive) but I can sort of see the logic.

I'm most upset because by the time I get to use the Board properly, you'll all be high-ranking members and I'll still be a 'New Member' ... that is unless someone can offer me some reason why I can't log-in as a registered member.
I have registered. Paul has confirmed my account and the system auto-completes my log-in by completing my name and password. Immediately after registration, I was recognised only as a Guest. A day or so later, after my son proved that I was a registered user by logging on on his PC, I too was able to log on under my own name on my PC. I thought that was the end of it as everything appeared to be working. The next day I was recognised only as a Guest again. A day later I was being logged in time after time without the need to complete the log-in details, so I changed my Profile. I was convinced that whatever had gone wrong before was now fixed. However, since then, try as I might, I can only log on as a Guest. I can log on OK on my spare computer (Win ME with Internet Explorer) but not on my main one (WinXP with Firefox or Internet Explorer) which I'm using now. The evidence would suggest that the problem is on my PC, but I can't think what it could be. I use a program called EndItAll to turn off all unwanted running programs when there is a possibility of interference, but even after turning everything off, the log on fails for me.
There is no error message associated with whatever is happening. After filling in my user name and password, the screen clears, except for the top-most lines where the greeting is, and then re-draws exactly the same as it was before.
I'm also unable to post this message under my registered user name, Geoff as I'm told that name is already in use by someone else (that's me, I guess).
I have discussed the problem with Paul, but he too is at a loss. Would anyone be able to suggest what might be happening?

Geoff: Try dumping all your cookies (perhaps save them in a "safe" folder in the trash until you're sure you don't need them), quit your browser, and restart it.
If that doesn't work it's got me ******ed.
Most forums I inhabit have occasional log-in hiccups like that, and the "delete cookies"/start again trick usually fixes it, whether on Mac or Windoze, and in Firefox, Opera, Safari, IE, and OmniWeb.

Verbivore,
I should have added that I use a program called CCleaner to remove 'leftovers' from installations and Internet browsing, and other accumulated rubbish. The program allows me to preserve selected cookies and delete all others. Since registering for the Forum, I have not preserved any new cookies, not even the Proboards81 cookie. I have removed all the new cookies that have been set but not preserved. I repeated the exercise just now. It has not made any difference to my logging on.

Geoff, I have deleted the "Geoff" account. Perhaps you might like to start again?

Paul,
I re-registered. The result is the same: can't log on using my main PC, but can do so on my spare PC. Simply has to be a problem on this PC, but what?
In spite of all the cautions I was given once before, it might be time to wipe my HDD and install Vista. For the time being, I'll sit back and observe the development of your 'baby' ... promotion is not important

It's not promotion so much, Geoff, but the sheer effort of typing the security code each time you want to post anything.
I've written to you.

For reference: this board preserves login state by using two cookies, both in the domain not-the-aps.proboards81.com
Their names are user and pass, both have maximum (2038) expiry dates.
Both are deleted when logout on the top menu bar here is clicked.

Simply had to post something seeing how my log-in has been working reliably all day. This is the third time I have turned the computer on and it's still working.
As I've already said to Paul in e-mail correspondence, I can't explain it, but I have been logging on 100% reliably under the usernames 'xxxx' and 'Geoff' this morning. I have done nothing differently today from what I do every other day, and I can't think of anything I did late last night that might have changed the way things are working this morning. I am not prepared to say everything, or anything, is fixed. Let's wait a while and see what happens next.
Watch this space.
