People may be interested in how the "New Member" status comes about, and when or how it changes.
It's simply a recognition of how many messages a member has posted. The levels are:
New member = below 50 posts Junior member = 50 to 99 posts Full member = 100 to 249 posts Senior member = 250 to 499 posts God = 500 posts or more
The number of posts for a member is given to the left of each of his/her posts. The member list shows everyone's count.

Sounds like a challenge, there. Tone

Now, wouldn't it be juvenile to accept the challenge! (Like this.)
Will we actually get to a polytheistic board, or do we usurp a mono- ?

Ooo, that's fightin' talk, Tone! Doubtles what's-his-name from the other forum will take us to task about usurping the Divine Capitalisation (or whatever it was).

I wondered about that! It sounds a trifle daft to me! I can put up with being "new", but "junior"?! The scale doesn't seem to be a logical progression. It hardly seems necessary at all, since the number of posts is visible and we can surely make up our own minds about what this may denote.

Might I suggest that something like "Freshman, Sophomore etc." might be more appropriate for this forum.

>Sophomore<
Indeed, Vv. I think it means something like "second year student" to Americans, but otherwise (from sophism, and in English English) it means someone who's "self-assured and opinionated but crude and immature". I may BE that, but I wouldn't want to display it against my postings!

I believe that you should be able to change the titles and set your own required numbers for achievement. I can, yes. But it hardly seems worth the effort.

You could confuse everyone, Paul, by setting them at:
Gladys Albert Vera George Dorothy

My (very) late uncle, who was always a bit of a wag, lived as a child in a flat under one occupied by a Yorkshire family called Parrot. It is beyond the scope of this forum to go into the delights of their peculiarities, but suffice it to say that there were plenty of them. They were introduced to him by the eldest son, who was at the time about the same age as my uncle. Based on their names, my uncle always dealt cards by mentioning them in turn, quoting the son, rather than counting numbers. As he dealt, he would intone: Dad, mum, meself, Jim, Flo, Nob, Chuck and the baby. No, I'm not suggesting we label ourselves with this list in reverse, I was just reminded of the story! Sue

May I add my two pennyworth of congratulations to Paul for this rather splendid new site. I must own that I am totally ignorant as to how one might go about creating such a thing on the net and I am very impressed that this one was produced so quickly and efficiently, and so user-friendly too.
Although only being an occasional poster on the APS site I have always found the contributions made there as being interesting, instructive, and entertaining. (Inclusion of HOC for the edification of Tone.) And I am glad that Paul has given us the opportunity of continuing in the same vein.
As to the question of ‘Status’ might I suggest: Young Apprentice, Senior Apprentice, Craftsman(woman), Journeyman(woman) and Guild Member.
G-E.

Yes, good to have you with us, G-E.
As for the membership status, I'm going to leave it alone for a week or two and see if it still seems relevant then. Then I can change it if we see fit.
The next major thing to happen is that the board will go ad-free on May 1st. I'm not sure yet if that will be permanent: more on that in a day or two.
