Twice recently I have copied a URL from the address bar of a web page and pasted it into a message on this board. On both occasions, a dot went missing. Alan P fixed the first such instance - in the thread "My day was not wasted: I found a new word!" (as I hadn't noticed the introduced error) but a moment ago, when previewing a post I had written in the "Write me" thread, I noticed (and confirmed by trying the link - only to get a "page not found: error in URL" message) that the dot between www and the next bit of the URL was missing.
Has anyone else here had a similar experience, and do you have any theories on why it is so?
Thanks.

I haven't experienced your problem, but did try your actions with both of your examples thusly: - go to the site
- highlight the URL
- right click
- copy
- past into WORD to confirm
- paste into forum reply box
- highlight URL
- click the button
- click the 'Preview' button
- test the link
All worked, no missing pieces. I can understand missing the front or the back character(s) because of incomplete highlighting, but not something in the middle! I did note that this forum will convert something that looks like a URL into a link, but only up to a certain length. E.g., your link to your site is long so the front part was made into a link (which got the "page not found" error when tested), but when completely enclosed with , then was shortened (using the ellipsis) and linked OK. PS Didn't we have a 'numbered list' button? Is that what the button replaced?

Think you're right about the numbered list, Dave. Baffled by Vv's missing characters. It'll be his Mac - famously unreliable.

Let me have a looky-see then. Maybe we should create another post in the FAQ to address such issues? I will leave it up to the artist formerly known as God, now known as Platinum.

Vadim: All those links work - as do mine at all times other than the two mentioned.
I paste the URL into my post, select it, and hit the hyperlink button to make the URL active. The dot has, on both occasions, been missing from somewhere in the middle of the URL, so it has me foxed.
No doubt one of those annoying and inexplicable glitches of technology - the kind that no-one else ever experiences, and that one can't replicate when trying to demonstrate it.
Rather like taking a car to a mechanic only to have it refuse to display the symptoms complained of.

continued.... After several attempts at trying to get an invalid link, I have drawn a blank. I have tried several different methods: - Inserting using [;
[2] Inserting not using ; [III] Inserting extra long addresses; [] Inserting short addresses; [ FIVE] Using the full "post reply" feature; [......] Using the "quick reply" feature.
I don't really know how your links are failing. Maybe you can do a similar test, Vv, it may be your browser settings? *List made fancy for the benefit of Dave.

I hate nothing more, than something I cannot solve! I'm not going to sleep tonight! Thanks, Vv!

On most forums, to get an ordered (numbered) list using UBBCode (or whatever they call it; what's used in place of HTML) you can edit the default (unordered) code for the start of a list,

Replace the * inside the square brackets with whatever you would like as the list, Alan. For example: [1]big [2]fat [3] cat, gives: (the 1,2,3 can be anythign you choose, i, ii, iii etc. )

The point of a numbered list is that it numbers itself consecutively automatically, including renumbering when insertions and deletions to the list are made.

Vadim, I know that. I was simply saying that this board doesn't support the normal UBBCode. In other forums you only need put in - s are replaced automatically, with 1, 2, 3, etc.

Vadim, I know that. Sorry, Alan. I wasn't suggesting you didn't know that, and wouldn't of posted my reply to your comment. However, your comment was nothing like than when I replied!

I'm afraid I don't have the answer to that one, Dave. However, don't you think it is better this way? I mean, how many items do you want to list on a simple message board? If it had to be done like this in a word-processor, then yes, I'd complain. I kind of like how it is here, I can include silly little images of numbers. ;D Small things and all that .
