Maybe I just need to stop reading the news before it gives me an ulcer. So many of my posts seem to be generated by infelicities in ABC News Online! I accept that journos-cum-newswriters are under tremendous pressure to get stories out, but the sloppiness is far too frequent for this old grump. From www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/07/18/2308317.htm (ABC News Online): Second paragraph of an article on Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday (my emphases): Oh dear. The only valid use of statesmans that I can think of is the plural of a faux-prestige Australian car, the (General Motors) Holden Statesman.

Our own BBC is very good at correcting typos in webpages when pointed out. I wonder whether you should be writing to ABC, vv, not us!

Oh dear. That's worse than making a mistake in the first place -- we all do that, after all -- as it indicates they just don't care enough.
