Some of the posters who came here from the APS board will remember a good friend of mine, one Peter (H)aitch, who posted there for a few months.
Peter was an great linguistic wit, a writer, editor, artist/illustrator (and car restorer extraordinaire, and house builder ... ) - something of a polymath. I recall sending someone a copy of Peter's play Asylum that I published for him in 2006.
Peter died yesterday morning (Monday 28 July), aged 71, of emphysema and post-operative complications from oesophageal cancer surgery.
His dying wish was to listen to Victor Borge's 'Phonetic Punctuation' routine - a request I was privileged to assist with. Within seconds of the recording's end, Peter's laboured breathing - difficult enough without having to support laughter - failed him. But he died laughing: way to go!
I have been left a large pile of his MSS to publish, and I look forward to putting my colophon on some of the best writing I've had the privilege to process.

I remember Peter's musings, Vv. Thanks for letting us know - and for the heartening tale, which allowed me to smile with (and for) him.

That's the way I want to log off if I shall have the possibility to choose.

I'm very sorry to hear this. I read (and enjoyed) Peter's play. My sympathy and condolences go to those he leaves behind (including you, Vv).

I'm very sorry to hear your news, Vv. I also well remember Peter's posts to the APS, even though he didn't post for long. But what a great way to go!

Thank you, all. I'm sure Peter would be chuffed to learn that he was so remembered through such virtual connections.
Peter insisted there be no funeral, no flowers, no cards, no godbothering, no fuss - but he can't stop us pouring a memorial libation, so on Thursday (cremation day) his local friends will gather, informally, at a hostelry where we shall have what will, I suppose, amount to a wake.
This morning I found buyers for three of his cars (he was well respected for his meticulous restorations; the cars had been advertised two weeks ago): a 1947 MG TC, a WWII Jeep (ex-army, LHD), and one of his 1937 straight-eight Buicks. There remain two Buicks, and Mk V and Mk VII Jags.
I shall let you know when his writings are published.
