I don't know how members use the forum, but I thought it might be worth pointing out that (unless you share a computer with people you don't trust -- say in an Internet cafe) you might as well stay logged in "forever". (Forever is the bottom entry in the drop-down list in the login area.)
When you've finished on the board, just navigate away -- don't click logout. That way, next time you come back you won't have to log in again.
Even if you stay logged in forever, the board will drop your name from the list of "Users Online" if you don't do anything with the board (that is, you don't view or refresh any board screen) for about eight minutes.

And do you know that (when you are using the full editor -- not the "quick reply" box) you can type your message then go back and make any word(s) italic or bold?
Just double-click a word to highlight it, then click the relevant button.

Paul, I was trying to use the [glow=red,2,300]glow[/glow]button earlier but it has the added effect of isolating the relevant word on a new line, as you can see. Do you know why?

Dodgy HTML, Pete.
It's probably best avoided -- it doesn't even glow in Firefox! (At least, not here.)

Yes, I wondered what it was for, too. Can't you remove all the useless buttons, Paul, to save confusing us?

I think it puts the word on a new line so that the formatting isn't knackered. The glowing letters appear in a larger font (notwithstanding the extra size caused by the 'glow'), so line spacing (if the word is contained in a normal line) will be upset, so the system drops them down, giving them a [glow=green,6,500]nice tall line of their own.[/glow]
(You can also adjust the glow and font weight, as well as colour!)

Can't you remove all the useless buttons, Paul, to save confusing us? [glow=orange,2,300]I can't Sue, sadly. Still, at least Pete and Barry are having fun![/glow]

I wondered what this was all about. I use Opera and nothing special happens there either, other than messing up the line. I took a look in IE7 to find out what was going on and was not particularly impressed. As already mentioned, nothing special happens in Firefox either. Still, so long as it doesn't frighten the horses ...

Is there a place where we lucky few can see how to manipulate the system? My mulitole colours were achieved by changuing the word 'red' in the "glow=red,2,300" to other colours and previewing the result.

In none of the foregoing posts in this thread have I seen any glow effect or coloured text - and I've checked in Firefox (default), Safari, and Opera. They all give me plain text (on word-separate lines) for that glow effect. Not that I'm feeling overly deprived. Here are my own tries: glow (default) = [glow=red,2,300]GLOW[/glow] Patently doesn't work in my view in any browser triedshadow (default) = [shadow=red,left,300]SHADOW[/shadow] Patently doesn't work in my view in any browser triedOther effects that DO work for me: bolditalicunderscorestrikethroughredgreenpurpleblueetc.

All of the effects work for me. My browser is IE7 but I don't know whether there may also be issues with other software in other people's computers. Mine is a 4-year-old Packard Bell, so it's not new or particularly up-to-date.

I think all the effects except "glow" and "shadow" will work for everyone (well, no guarantees if you're using NCSA Mosaic from 1993). I suspect that "glow" and "shadow" rely on IE-specific CSS.

I'm using Netscape 8.1.3 based on Firefox, and all those effects you're trying are working OK here.

Oo, interesting, Dave. "Dropshadow" and "Glow" use the CSS filter command, which I thought was a Microsoft extension. www.ssi-developer.net/css/visual-filters.shtmlMaybe Netscape is following Microsoft? Who owns it now -- still AOL or Time-Warner?
