I hadn't heard/read "who's been in the knife drawer?" before this thread; I grew up with "who had razor blades for breakfast?" meaning the same.

I suppose it's 'sharpness by association' - if you've been in the knife drawer, you must be something sharp. One might also argue that the whetstone/sharpener is also kept in the knife drawer ...
