Oh dear - Aunty does it again! On ABC News Online www.abc.net.au/news/, in a tag to a news item: ISPs = good ISP's = probably acceptable to Merkins (and some older-style Aussies) but ISPs' (in the given context)? Aaarrrggghhh!

Horrible - but perhaps a remnant of re-editing, from an original involving the ISPs' move to block ?

Horrible - but perhaps a remnant of re-editing, from an original involving the ISPs' move to block ? That had occurred to me, Dave, but I'm afraid that Aunty has been getting terribly sloppy over the past year or so. Either there's been more budget pruning, resulting in an under-resourced writing/editing/proofing department, or perhaps she can afford to hire only less educated staff these days. Aunty has suffered for many years now from de-funding by government - particularly conservative ones, as those governments see Aunty as too critical and a tad too Left.

You should read Flat Earth News by Nick Davies, Vv (if you haven't already). One of his central tenets is that traditional journalism has almost disappeared under the weight of "24hr rolling news" and multi-channel reporting. Journalists have to produce four times as much copy as they used to have to, and the budgets are stretched to cover print, web, radio, TV and all the other outlets at a time when advertising revenue is decreasing. For example, he says that BBC journalists are required to write up a new story for the BBC website in only four minutes and supports it with internal BBC memos. The result, he claims, is a corrupted and debased news process, ripe for exploitation by cunning lobbyists and propagandists (usually government-led). Another, result, of course, would be an increase in minor editing errors and grammatical oversights.

Paul: Yes, I do suspect such to be the case. Further, our Aunty is still completely advert-free, so is completely reliant on the public purse.
Thanks for the link - the book sounds interesting.

Sloppy editing by the BBC News is merely a symptom of the general malaise that is afflicting the whole of society. Everything is now inefficient - business, banks, bureaucracy, government, services etc. The causes of this malaise are rooted in the poor standard of education; a decline in moral standards; lack of respect; selfishness; decline in the maintenance of Christian values.

As Tone once said to the world (well, those watching, anyway) on television --
"Britain -- down the drain!"

Bertie, you shouldn't make your irony so watertight, or you might end up going the same way as Defoe! Sue

Maybe they are symptoms? Yes ... not sure I follow the logic, there. I actually find banks to be nowadays WAY more efficient than ever they were before, and found them to be particularly efficient in a non-Christian country.
