I, too, have issues with the use of the term God, but from the other side of the coin. Mayhap this is something that Paul could alter to something more relevant to a language board. Professor?

What about the way it is now?

Paul, That probably works better from both perspectives. I haven't noticed what happens below silver (bronze and something else?), but I imagine it will all make sense. It will take me a while to assimilate it, and maybe someone will have a different suggestion. But at least, for now, I think this does avoid the difficulty that is emerging. (But it also has a more competitive feel to it - perhaps nothing will be ideal!) Susan.

What about the way it is now? Thank you for such a prompt response. It epitomises your benevolent autocracy. If it is actually a requirement to have some sort grading system, then I guess that one based on precious metals is fairly uncontroversial. For my part, I actually very rarely pay much attention to the left-hand column and have only just seen that some kind person has awarded me a plaudit. These matters seem to be of much more concern to some other posters whom, I'm sure, will wish to add their comments on the new style.

Vv, welcome to senior membership and roll on godhood! Thanks, Pete. ;D The prospect of godhood raises issues for this atheist (as it does for another regular poster to this board). Perhaps I should stop posting at one short of the magic number. Who was it said that each morning he woke up and thanked God that he was an atheist? In truth, I am a devout atheist myself. But this is, after all, only a bit of fun!

Vv, >The prospect of godhood raises issues for this atheist<Ah. But as a god you should be omnipotent and thus be able to both disbelieve in yourself an exist at the same time! Paul, Why limit it to the (precious?) metals? Start at the low end of the periodic table and work up! That way, even gold can be beaten. (Tone -- hydrogen striving for helium!) Tone

Perhaps the highest accolade for this forum should be "Hot air".

Well, I could just turn it off, but it seems a shame, somehow. I'll leave it like this for now.

Continuing in the spirit of fun - are you actually able to insert any titles you wish for the grades, or are you limited to a choice from a list? (Your loss of godhood does not diminish your omnipotence)

What about the way it is now? It also offers the chance of further progression, for 1,000 posts, say, and beyond. After platinum, maybe rhodium, uranium, plutonium?

To answer both Pete and Bertie, I can create any titles I wish, I can have up to 10 levels, and I can decide the number of posts at which each level starts.
I did toy with BEM, MBE, OBE, CBE, Knight, Duke, Earl, Viscount, Prince, Monarch -- but thought it might confuse non-British participants (and is gendered) ...
