Eton College periodically advertises for a Dame. Perhaps you'd find your niche there, Barry?

To answer both Pete and Bertie, I can create any titles I wish, I can have up to 10 levels, and I can decide the number of posts at which each level starts. I did toy with BEM, MBE, OBE, CBE, Knight, Duke, Earl, Viscount, Prince, Monarch -- but thought it might confuse non-British participants (and is gendered) ... I think, then, that it should be harder than it is to reach the top-ten level, which has already been achieved by more than one poster in the brief life of this board. Maybe suggestions could be made for the terminology to be used, and the level at which they could be achieved. It would be nice if they were somehow related to the general subject matter of the forum. (I don't have any ideas - just trying to generate some conversation )

- question mark
- exclamation mark
- comma
- semi-colon
- colon
- full stop?

Trouble is, there has to be some progression to it, surely? I can see a progression between semi-colon and colon, but question mark being less than exclamation mark, and both being less than comma?

... as long as I don't have to wear the top hat ... Surely a Dame would need a fluorescent wig and large-spotted trousers?

It was a starting point intended to stimulate debate. It's also a largely arbitrary scale but it has more to do with what we debate here than precious metals or the original grades. What about letter, word, clause, sentence, paragraph, chapter, part, book, series and library?

No, Paul. That's an auguste. Oh no it isn't! (OK, substitute garish stripy leggings for the trousers.)

>(OK, substitute garish stripy leggings for the trousers.)<Accepted. (Don't do it again!) Re "stripy": SOED stripy a. & n. Also ( the usual form as n.) -ey. And I was sure it was with the "e" for both! (So I'll give you that one.) Tone
