Twod, there seems no end to this naming nonsense. I suspect computers or AI are employed to invent, sift, and sort potential names, but if those machines aren't adequately programmed in the international nuances of language they're bound to come up with the occasional "Wanker" or "C---" (Punto). It's the GIGO principle in action.

As many of us will be over-indulging in food tomorrow I thought this article on Aussie food slang might be appropriate. Enjoy your traditional winter roast, your summer barbecue, your plum pudding, your trifle, your pavlova and ice-cream, the company of that mad aunt ... or whatever you do on this annual occasion of excess and conspicuous consumption. My family will no doubt be tossing another prawn (shrimp) on the barbie (barbecue).

During a lull in conversation on Christmas Day, one of the family admitted to the sudden realisation that a pullover was so called because one pulls it on over one’s head! This led to a more Christmassy discussion about the origin and precise meanings of hosanna, noël and hallelujah. Of course, visitors to this forum may be fully cognisant about these matters — but, for those who are not, it may be worth a few minutes Googling. 😳

Quote: "You have [many different] ethnic groups and they all communicate using Kukatja as a lingua franca, as a contact language, and that is very unique," Dr Berscia said.”
It may be that the journalist has oversimplified something understood by the researcher, but there doesn’t seem anything unique about this arrangement. You’ve only got to travel across Europe and call in at a motorway services for fuel to see French, Danish, German etc people go up to the person on the Italian, Slovenian, etc till and automatically speak in English.

A phenomenon I've observed over the past year is the addition of on to love or hate: to love on / to hate on. Where and when did this usage arise? I could be wrong, but it appears to have arrived in Oz via the (anti)social media that people psittacistically mimic.

As it's 21:45 in eastern Oz, it's time to bid adieu to 2019 and to wish you all a wonderful NYE and a healthy and prosperous 2020!
See you next year.

I think I have never heard either usage and have asked my 15yr old Aussie granddaughter. She also says she has heard neither before.
Happy New Year to all. 🥳

No doubt a psittacism.

A Happy New Year to you all. I hope that in 2020 the bush fires dissipate quickly in Oz, the USA elects a worthy president, and Brexit isn't a complete catastrophe for the UK (though I'm preparing my "I told you so" placard).
My New Year's resolution remains the same as always: to live forever or die in the attempt.
