When are two apostrophes in one word correct? Bear in mind the answer is dialectically-based (though not Marxist...) Those of you from the APS forum might have the advantage in seeing and reading about my location. Rick

Hi, Rick
Formal, and semi-formal structures rarely use more than one - but of course there are examples:

In old texts you can find "sha'n't", too.

Do people really say that, Dave? My experience is that (because it's easier?) they slide in the "wuh" and say I wouldn't've.

Do people really say that, Dave? Well, probably not--it's just my favorite, though.

There was an informally-known Peckerwood Hill prison cemetery here in town until a few years ago on Peckerwood Hill. I guess that political correctness and/or the increase in population with its resultant increase in public exposure (yes, I chose those words carefully!) made its formal name of Capt. Joe Byrd Cemetery become better known, as well as lessened the use of Peckerwood Hill as a geographic identifier.
I use the names for their shock value these days, but that's just me.

Keep your pecker up, Tone. I don't think it's an American thing.
