Maybe I'm getting the expertise in an academic sense ;D Indeed. Most impressive.

>To me it means female pubic area and/or pubic hair. To my children it seems to mean vagina.<
And me likewize your children.
Mayhap it slipped in a (your) generation and then reverted. Or mayhap you "guessed" wrongly -- or more politely? -- when you first heard it.

Or mayhap you "guessed" wrongly -- or more politely? -- when you first heard it. Well, most of the entries at www.urbandictionary.com seem to agree with me. OED is ambiguous.

urbandictionary goes further and proposes that it was Scots Gaelic for 'septic vagina'. :PNice! I liked the other urban dicitionary entries: "a male or female who fell out of the ugly tree at birth and hit every branch on the way down" and "Someone who was not just touched by the ugly stick at birth but was battered severely with it. Anyone who does not look better to you after several strong alcoholic drinks probably fits this category."

None of which answer the original question, of course.

These may be taken with a pinch of salt, I think, as certainly urbandictionary is a Wiki site, and contributions feel as though they are written more with an eye to enthusiasm and publicity than to accuracy/research. I've had a look at a couple of Scots Gaelic dictionaries online, but I can't find any direct reference (although, given Gaelic spelling, for all I know, I should be looking under 'Bh'). Michael Quinion, usually a good source, doesn't seem to have the word anywhere on his site. I took this to mean that we didn't have a reliable answer, Paul. But I did rather like Barry's post.

I think, Pete, Paul was taking a gentle swipe at the rambling nature of the thread. The original question (Puzzle: when are two apostrophes correct?) was, indeed, answered some while ago!
