Why is that strange, Pete? Presumably you have an ad-blocker on the home PC but not (or not a very good one!) on the work PC? I thought someone had paid $7 to remove the ads from the pages for us. Or did I misunderstand the whole thing?

I don't think anyone has paid for this month, Pete.

Pete,
Seven dollars bought Paul ad blocking only to the end of last month.

I get it now, someone else has paid for July but not June. That's fine. I have just bought $7 credits but the system won't let me apply them to block ads - I keep getting to an administrator's page that it tells me I am not allowed to access. Help!!

I've only just noticed your quotation, below each posting, Pete. One of those subtly ambiguous lines that are useful , sometimes!

I was intrigued by the ad for a Vampire Weekend, until I realised it was the name of a band! Are we all seeing different ads? I have never seen anything about a Vampire Weekend. What I can see now for this page is "Reasons Not To Eat Salmon" and a Swedish ad with corrupted letters, all produced by "Ads by Google" but these ads will change as soon as I go to another page or even if I only refresh this one. Mine advertise popup blockers and adware and spyware removers!

The ads are generated each time a page is sent. So we don't all necessarily see the same ads, no.
Pete has indeed very generously added 7 units to the pot (which now contains exactly 7 units!) and I am just waiting for him to say whether he'd like the rest of June to be ad-free for all of us, or whether he'd rather do it for the whole of August.

Paul, sorry for the brief hiatus but we went out for dinner. June would be good, please. I am sure I'll have been able to save another $7 by August. And thanks for explaining why I couldn't do it myself! ;D

Thanks, Dave. It reminded me of the old saw about a person being better informed, rather than wiser. FE Smith, was it not? Having received a long lecture from Smith on some point of law, the judge remarked he was none the wiser. Smith replied "You may be no wiser, My Lord, but at least you are now better informed". Also the one where Smith was pulled up for suggesting a witness was not "as sober as a judge". When told by the bench that there was no need to bring judges into it, he reputedly said "I would hesitate to suggest that he was as drunk as a lord, My Lord".

Courtesy of Pete, we are now ad-free. Thank you very much, Pete!
And some kind soul has added another 7 credits to the pot, so it looks like we won't see any ads until September now.
(Recap for recent members: I can't tell who has added what to the pot unless they choose to send me a private message. Any number of credits from 1 to 140 may be added by anyone; each credit costs one US dollar via Google checkout, which will accept credit cards in almost any currency and do any necessary conversion to/from dollars. There's no obligation to contribute, it's entirely voluntary.)

Almost ironic that he became Lord Birkenhead, isn't it. Oh yes, I'd forgotten that! One of my favourite legal characters; I must google him.
