Although we have adverts back for June, we will be ad-free again in July. This is thanks to the kind generosity of a member who wishes to remain anonymous, and who has donated seven dollars via the Make This Board Ad-Free link.

I can't say I've noticed, anyway. Adblock Plus Firefox extension does a job job of keeping them out for me anyway, apart from the odd times when I sneak few minutes away from work to visit, and even then they are so unobtrusive as to merge into the background. Unlike another certain forum!
Thanks to A.N. Onymous, anyway! ;D

I have mixed feelings about using ad-blockers here; it seemed fair enough on the other site because they were outrageously over-the-top, but the adverts here are so discreet and sensible it almost seems unfair to block them, given that Proboards provide the board for free.
So our benefactor has resolved the moral dilemma for me at least!

I have found myself giving up waiting for the page to load a couple of times - but that's just my connection. I can be contentedly a bit sparser if the ads are there (and less distracted from the things I ought to be doing instead!)

All I'm getting as ads is one little box near the top of each page (where I tend never to go, anyway). If that's all that is involved, it's hardly worth anyone spending real money to be rid of it, I'd say.

it's hardly worth anyone spending real money to be rid of it For you, Dave, maybe not. For those who have contributed (me, for one), presumably it was worth it. Of course, one person doesn't need to pay the full seven dollars. It's possible to pay as little as one dollar -- and if six other people do that, that's the seven dollars provided. As I said way back, none of it is actually necessary. But it's an interesting social experiment, and I for one feel I got good value for my £3.28 !

I notice that sometimes I am getting a Swedish ad at the top of the page so somewhere along the line my IP is being interrogated and ads are accordingly being produced to target me.
Hmm, very sophisticated for a message board.

I notice that sometimes I am getting a Swedish ad at the top of the page Hmm... and I'm getting adverts for things which include my name, such as the Amanda Perez ringtone, the Amanda Hotel Dahib and the Samui Amanda Resort (!)

I can shed no light, I'm afraid. I have no idea how the adverts work, except that the google ones (and maybe they are all google ones) are known to be based on the contents of the page in which they are displayed.

I 'spose that information such as my location (Sweden) and Amanda's name (amanda) can be picked up from the "Member's Bio" shown on each page.

I'm finding these adverts quite amusing. Check out the "Devon-caught shellfish and Thai-style crab and fish cakes" ! I must look out for those crab cakes when I'm paddling in Ilfracombe.

Due to the conversations on "adverts", my advertisements are now advertising, yes you guessed it, adverts!

It's strange that the ad blocking stops the ads when I am working from my home computer but I am now logged in from my work laptop and the ads are all there.

I was intrigued by the ad for a Vampire Weekend, until I realised it was the name of a band!

Why is that strange, Pete? Presumably you have an ad-blocker on the home PC but not (or not a very good one!) on the work PC?
