Ooh, this looks like being fun! Unfortunately it's "hello and goodbye" from me, because I'll be away from the PC for several weeks starting on Friday (25th).
Paul, do messages stay put indefinitely on this forum (unless the poster deletes her/his own)?

Twod,
I'm not Paul (obviously) but I run a similar forum, and the answer to your question is "yes". (Unless Paul, as Administrator, deletes it, of course.)

Once upon a time there was a kindly dragon who overlooked a happy country and, as he dozed, used his fiery breath with caution to keep the country warm and comfortable. Then, one day, the dragon awoke and got a bit tetchy about the way people were straying (or, as we might say, "thinking for themselves"). In irritation, the dragon flexed his claws and lashed his tail ... and triggered a fire-extinguisher!
But then, switching metaphors in mid-stream, as it were, there was this bloke Noah ...
Well done, Paul. Tone will continue his search (if he can only work out how the board works) for a TS hereon. And promote the HOC! Excelsior!
Tone P.S. Is there a preview? (Oh, I see it's just popped up at the bottom -- but only because I've done a "modify". 'Twasn't there for the original post!) Do we do HTML codes, or the other ones, for italics et al?

Thank you all! Tone, you do the other ones -- the ones in square brackets. If you use the "full" reply screen (see below for how) you get some buttons to click. Highlight a word and click the "italic" button, for example.

And you also get some [glow=red,2,300]other [/glow][shadow=red,left,300]effects [/shadow]to try out!
Although some of them only work in Internet Explorer, I think.

Yes, well done, Paul - and so quickly, too. I'm worrying about two things, now: (1) in the conditions for the forum, it says: " You agree, through your use of this forum, that you will not post any material which is false, defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise in violation of ANY law. This is not only humorous, but legal actions can be taken against you." Humorous?? (2) I'm not wanting to add to the FAQ thread itself, as that will make it untidy, but I'll make a plea here to change the examples concerning the Smiths and the Joneses: The plural of Smith is Smiths: I'm going to the Smiths for a barbecue. The plural of Jones is Joneses: I'm going to the Joneses for a barbecue. In each of those, the place I'm going is potentially possessive, and DOES need the apostrophe. We'd say I'm going to Robert's, so we'd say I'm going to the Smiths'. Perhaps it would be better to use I'm going to ask the Smiths to my barbecue.

Do you know, I didn't even read them. Nothing I can do about it anyway, and no doubt ProBoards are trying to protect their back.

Good point. I'll lock it and start a discussion thread about it. As to whether the example is right, I'm undecided. People seem to ask what they should put on the house signs, so I wanted to reflect that.
When you go to a barbecue do you go to the people or to the house?

I'll answer in "How does the board work", Twod, if that's OK?

I hope we'll carry on here as we have been doing. Thanks for setting up this forum, Paul. I feel as though I've been thrown into the sea after swimming around in a pool for a while. Problem is, I'm not a strong swimmer! Just as I'd learnt to cope with the quirks of the APS forum, I now have to learn to navigate this one. Still, I know I'll get help, which is why I'm thrashing around with gay abandon already!

Paul, Thanks and well done from me, too. I am only an infrequent poster but I am (or was?) a frequent visitor to the old site, so it's good to know that all you committed contributors out there are still going to be posting.

Thanks from me, too, Paul - as I have posted on the APS forum, it's sad that John's taken a decision which will basically kill that forum off, but let's hope its spirit can be recreated here.
